Dead harbor porpoise on Alki Beach

A harbor porpoise was found dead on south Alki Beach yesterday. The animal, most likely a sub-adult, was recovered this morning by a NOAA stranding expert and a necropsy will be performed by Cascadia Research. Severe wounds were evident on the animal, but actual cause of death will be determined by the necropsy. Harbor porpoises are a somewhat rare sight around Alki, however, a pod is often sighted in South Puget Sound. An Alki beach observer saw a pod of 10 porpoises swimming offshore earlier in the day on Sunday.
