Chubby yearling a welcome sight

A chubby harbor seal yearling hauled out this morning on the safety of a mossy pier. What is a “yearling”? In order to lessen confusion, a pup from last season, though not technically a year old, is called a yearling. The seal pupping season varies in different areas of the Pacific Northwest. In mid-April pups begin to be born on the SW Coast of Washington, but here in South Puget Sound, our pups are typically born late June - September.
