Volunteer's first day on the job

Lynn Bentley officially became a member of Seal Sitters yesterday after discovering a young pup on the cement boardwalk of Alki Beach! After a long, cold and wet day guarding a pup from curious onlookers and dogs, she finally headed home at 9:30 pm, exhausted and concerned. The pup was still hauled out and sleeping peacefully under the watchful eyes of other volunteers. Read her comments after receiving an early morning email that the pup finally returned to the sea after midnight:

“I was so happy to read this that I cried. First couple of tears were for Forte and for his determination. The rest of the tears were selfishly for myself. Yesterday morning, I borrowed this man's cell phone to call the 800 number on the NOAA sign with very little expectation that they would send anyone to help out this little baby seal. They must get hundreds of these calls. I left the pup to run home to get my own cell phone...just in case (holding a little optimism inside). When I got back, not 15 minutes later, there was Robin already in action. I was truly shocked and elated.

So the rest of the tears I cried were tears of happiness that Forte introduced me to this amazing group of women yesterday who rescued ME from this feeling of helplessness and hopelessness that this little seal pup’s life meant anything to anyone besides me. I made the phone call but you all, Janette, Robin, Brenda and Sue, saved his life and undoubtedly changed mine.

I'm putting on my long johns to take my pooch out for a walk. Maybe I will run into Robin on the boardwalk. I’ll keep my eyes opened for Forte!

Seal Sitters ROCK!   I'm in!

~ Lynn”
